Because He Can

I'm sure that the proudest moment a father can have is recognizing the point when his son learns to pee standing up. It's a turning point. Today Hobie, my dog of 9 months, lifted his leg and let loose like a male dog for the very first time.

It's difficult to articulate feelings during a moment like this other than to just say "I'm so proud" and leave it at that. I'm glad I was there to share the moment with him.

I'm a realist, and I know that this isolated incident is probably just that. It will take time to commit the motion to muscle memory and make a habit out of peeing like a male dog but now that I've seen that balancing on 3 legs is something he can do, I have no doubt that someday soon, there will be no more embarrassing moments at the park for Hobie and I.

As an owner of an adult male dog who fails to lift his leg most of the time, I am interested in how you achieved success. Did you pee against trees and sign posts while lifting one of your legs to demonstrate the procedure? Did you use other methods such as instructional videos, lectures, positioning the dog's legs while wearing water-proof gloves?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Quite an achievement, my parent's curret dog has mastered the tripod-pee, although, when he's in a new place, or a little embarrassed, he'll revert to the tried and true method of the squat.

Thanks for your comments - though Hobie has not been consistently lifting his leg, he has demonstrated a loose pattern which gives me hope that someday, he'll grow to be the man-dog I've always envisioned.

To answer your question, I feel that I did play a roll in his arrival at the 3-legged precision-urination stance. During our daily trips to the park I reminded Hobie to "get that leg up" when he lazily squatted like a girl dog. On numerous occasions I stood on one leg and lifted my leg while I said "get that leg up" to really drive the point home.

I'm glad to help so feel free to email for more assistance.
